call for artists: SGCI | San juan, puerto rico | April 1-4, 2020
Artists are sought to participate in a Themed Portfolio Exchange at the SGCI (printmaking) annual conference. The theme of this exchange is "Survival," drawing from the multiple ways in which survival has become part of life on the island of Puerto Rico and in the Caribbean writ large. From indigenous lifeways threatened by colonialism, to an ambiguous political position within the Americas, to the devastation associated with Hurricane Maria in 2017, the Puerto Rican experience helps people from anywhere grapple with the psychological and somatic affects of surviving an early-21st-century world with seemingly endless economic, political, and violent threats. Please note that your contribution need NOT be explicitly about Puerto Rico; anything that furthers the conversation about survival is what's at stake. The exchange format means that each participant makes an edition for the number of people involved in the group; each participant leaves with a portfolio containing one print from each person. Please submit a brief letter of interest, along with a brief bio, to Nicholas Bauch <firstname.lastname@example.org> no later than June 10, 2019.
